A Brief Report about Ma'anshan Cliff-Statues in Dazhi Township of Dongxing District of Neijiang City,Sichuan Province
There are 13 niches of cliff statues dated from the Middle to the Late Tang Dynasty in Ma'anshan of Dongxing District of Neijiang,Sichuan Province,with the inscription recording the statues that bears the signature of the 9th year of Zhengyuan(793).The statues are well preserved with broad themes,including the niche with Buddha and Taoist enshrined together,eleven-sided Thousand-Handed Guanyin,illustrated Samgha and Amitayur-Hhyana,Vaisravana and Sakyamuni preaching.The illustrated Samgha created in the 9th year of Zhengyuan(793)is the earliest of the monks'images with chronological record found in China.The discovery of the eleven-sided Thousand-Hand Avalokitesvara(Guanyin)serves as new material for the understanding of the Tantric religion in Sichuan,so does the'Da Jie Xiang'inscription found at the site as important material used for the study of the Buddhist rituals and monastic activities in the Tang Dynasty.
