An Introduction to the Northern-Dynasty Stone-Carved Inscriptions'Value in Shanxi Province
Shanxi took the special position in the Northern Dynasties. In the early Northern-Wei Dynasty,Pingcheng(today's Datong City)was the capital. When the Northern-Qi Dynasty was established,Jinyang(today's Taiyuan City)played as a second capital. The Wuzhoushan Grottoes(Yungang Grottoes)as the largest cave temple built by the royalty in the Northern Dynasties is located in the western suburbs of Pingcheng. The combination of the prominent position in military, politics and Buddhist religion in history with the Xianbei Tuoba's fondness of recording merits on stones left Shanxi with a number of the Northern-Dynasty stone inscriptions in forms of tablet, epitaph, statue inscription, cliff inscription, etc.,which serve as the valuable cultural relics and the documents for academic research. The comprehensive collation and study of these stone inscriptions is of great significance to Yungang studies,Northern-Dynasty politics, social structure, religious beliefs, the communication and blending of various ethnic groups in the north as well as the study of cultural exchanges along the Silk Road.
