A Survey into the Social History of a Buddhism Region with the Late-Tang'Inscription Recording Li Qiyuan et al Making Maitreya Statues'and the Longdong Cliff Buddha Statues in Rongxian,Sichuan
The stele inscription between the niches LDE-14 and LDE-16 of the Longdong cliff statues in Rongxian County,Zigong City,Sichuan Province,has been weathered away,but the Qing Dynasty rubbings and transcription remain known as the'Inscription Recording Li Qiyuan et al Making Maitreya Statues'(李栖元等造弥勒像记,Li Qīyuán Děng Zào Mí Lè Xiàng Jì).The three surviving stone inscriptions related to the Longdong carvings account for the historical event that Li Qiyuan,a military commander of the Jiannan Dongchuan Army,led to put down the chaos in Rong,Lu and other areas during the Huichang period of the Tang Dynasty;Against the backdrop of Emperor Xuanzong's(宣 宗)policy of reviving Buddhism,Li Qiyuan,Zheng Zao and other military and political figures organized a series of activities at Longdong in Rongxian carving niches and statues,building temples and donating land as well.This discovered tablet inscription interpreting the historical data behind these carvings makes an access to deeply exploring the connection between the Longdong cliff statues and the regional society.
