Preliminary probe to the transpiration water-consumption regularity of Popu-lus euphraticu and Populus pruinosa in Tarim Basin
Using two dominant tree species of Populus euphraticu and Populus pruinosa as experiment materials and pot culture experiments to simulate the different soil water status, the transpiration water-consumption regu-larity of their seedlings were studied. The results showed that different soil water contents had obvious effect on water consumption of two tree species.the trend was normal water>mild stress>media stress>severe stress in growth period. The monthly water consumption showed single peak and the peak value occurred on July.Water consumption of two tree species had significant difference under difierent soil water contents.it demonstrated soil water content was the major factor effecting tree the water consumption;weather conditions also effected the tree water consumption, peak value always occurred on sunny and Minimum occurred on cloudy day.Water consump-tion of P.pruinosa was higher thatr that of P.euphraticu under different soil content.Growth potential of P.pru-inosa was well than that of P.euphraticu under normal water and had higher water use efficiency. On the contra-ry,P.euphraticu gradually improved it's water use efficiency with soil water content decreasing. All above showed that P.euphraticu has good ecological adaptation to drought environment than P.pruinosa's and it can use efficiently limited water resources to survive in desert habitat.
