Can e-commerce improve the economic resilience of apple farmers?——Evidence from the micro-survey in the Loess Plateau region
Strengthening the economic resilience of farming households is important for consolidating the results of poverty eradication and realizing common prosperity.Based on 2005 research data from the three provinces of Shaanxi,Gansu and Shanxi, which are the main apple producing areas in the Loess Plateau, this paper constructs an index system for evaluating the economic resilience of apple growers, and investigates the impact and mechanism of e-commerce participation on the economic resilience of apple growers. It is found that there is a significant contribution of e-commerce participation to the economic resilience of apple growers, and this conclusion is still valid after a series of robustness tests.Mechanism analysis shows that social networks play a mediating role in the process of e-commerce participation affecting the economic resilience of apple growers.Heterogeneity analysis shows that e-commerce participation has a greater effect on the economic resilience of those apple growers who own larger production scales,or they are new-generation,or purely agricultural apple growers. Therefore,it is necessary to improve the policy support system for agricultural e-commerce,and play the role of e-commerce operation in broadening the social network of farmers,so as to enhance the economic resilience of farmers.
