Effects of animal dung and dung beetle on electrical conductivity and pH of typical grassland soils in Inner Mongolia
In grassland grazing ecosystems, dung beetles promote the decomposition of feces and play an important role in the material cycle of grassland ecosystems. However, the effects of dung beetle and animal dung on the electrical conductivity and pH of grassland soil are still less explored. This study used field in situ experiments to investigate the effects of dung beetles, horse dung, and cattle dung on soil electrical conductivity and pH values in the 0-5cm and 5-10cm soil layers of typical grasslands in Inner Mongolia within 0-60 days. The results showed that in the 0-5cm soil layer, with the addition of horse dung alone, the soil electrical conductivity increased with the increase of experimental days(p<0.05),reaching the maximum value of 303.22μS/cm on the 60th day. With the addition of cattle dung alone, the soil electrical conductivity increased firstly and then decreased with the increase of experimental days(p<0.05),reaching the maximum value of 202.1 μS/cm on the 7th day. After adding 1 or 2g of dung beetles, the soil electrical conductivity under horse dung increased firstly and then decreased with the increase of experimental days(p<0.05).Among them, after adding 2g of dung beetles, the maximum value of 297.5μS/cm was reached on the 7th day. There was no significant change in soil electrical conductivity under cattle dung treatment. The soil pH value was significantly affected by the type of animal dung. When there were no dung beetles added, the soil pH value under horse dung treatment was significantly higher on the 7th and 60th day(p<0.05)than other times. When the dung beetles were added, the pH value of the soil under horse dung treatment fluctuated and increased with the increase of experimental days, reaching its maximum value on the 60th day(pH=8.35).However,there was no significant difference(p>0.05)in the pH value of the soil under cattle dung treatment compared to the control(pH=7.34).The variation pattern of soil electrical conductivity and pH value in the 5-10cm soil layer was like that in the 0-5 cm soil layer. Both horse dung and cattle dung have a significant impact on soil electrical conductivity(p<0.05),while the effect of horse dung on soil pH increases significantly over time(p<0.05),but the cattle dung has no significant effect on soil pH.
