Does relay strip intercropping technology improve agricultural environmental efficiency?:Case study in the Southwest,Northwest, and Huanghuaihai regions of China
Maize-soybean relay strip intercropping technology(MRSIT)provides a way to promote sustainable agriculture and food supply security, yet evidence at the farmer level is still needed to determine whether it can promote green and efficient development of agriculture in large-scale promotion.Based on the research data from farmers in the Southwest,Northwest and Yellow Huaihai regions, this paper measures the environmental efficiency of the current Chinese soybean and maize production, and evaluates the impact of MRSIT on the agricultural environmental efficiency by using an endogenous switching model. The results of this study showed that:1)Overall,there is room for improvement in the environmental efficiency of current soybean and corn production. It is only by considering carbon emissions, nitrogen surplus, and carbon absorption that we can fully assess the benefits of adopting the MRSIT.2)Farmers'adoption of MRSIT can significantly improve environmental efficiency.Under a counterfactual assumption,if farmers do not adopt the MRSIT,their agricultural environmental efficiency is expected to decline by 5.01%.3)The improvement effect of farmers'MRSIT adoption varies among different extension regions, different types of farmers and different degrees of standardization.Accordingly, measures such as optimizing the layout of technology promotion, enhancing the precision of promotion policies, and strengthening technology demonstration and training should be taken to promote greener and more efficient agriculture.
