Aging, intergenerational contact, and adoption of agricultural green production technology:Evidence from the Yellow River Basin in China
Addressing the two major challenges faced during China's agricultural green transformation process:agricultural aging and difficulties in adopting agricultural green technologies, this study analyzes the behavior patterns of elderly farmers in adopting green production technologies from the perspective of intergenerational relationships.Using the Ordered Probit model, mediating effect model, and moderating effect model, the study systematically analyzes the adoption behavior of 451 elderly farmers in the Yellow River Basin regarding agricultural green production technologies. The results show that aging has a significant negative impact on the adoption of agricultural green production technologies.Economic support and daily care provided by their progeny are conducive to promoting the adoption of green production technologies by elderly farmers.Further analysis reveals that economic support provided by the the progeny alleviates financial difficulties and promotes the adoption of green production technologies, while daily care promotes the adoption of green production technologies through green ecological environment cognition, green social responsibility cognition, and green technology benefit cognition. Moreover, intergenerational differentiation has a negative impact on the adoption of agricultural green production technologies, but this impact is mainly concentrated in the deeply aged farmer group.Based on these findings, this study suggests that the positive role of economic support and daily care within the family should be fully leveraged, and that family members should form a more reasonable care allocation mechanism. At the same time, efforts should be made to strengthen rural family education and cultural inheritance to promote effective communication and mutual understanding among family members,in order to mitigate the potential negative impact of intergenerational differentiation on the adoption of green production technologies and provide strong support for the sustainable development of China's agriculture.
