Does Non-cognitive Ability Have a Greater Impact on Employment Outcomes of First-generation College Students?
The employment of the First-Generation College Students(FGCSs)is related to the realization of the important function of higher education in promoting social mobility and blocking the intergenerational transmission of poverty.Based on the analysis of the data from the 2022 National College Graduates Sampling Survey,it is found that the FGCSs are more likely to choose employment rather than go to graduate school. However, there is no significant difference between the two groups in terms of starting salary and job satisfaction.Non-cognitive ability is an important influencing factor for college students, even more important than cognitive ability, because it will not only affect job attainment, but also predict the starting salary and job satisfaction. The impact of non-cognitive ability and cognitive ability on starting salary and job satisfaction is consistent between the two groups. In the process of job attainment, cognitive ability and non-cognitive ability play a complementary or substitute role, but this influence is consistent between the two groups. The non-cognitive abilities of FGCSs are significantly lower than those of non-FGCSs.More peer interaction, social practice activities, family emotional support, school belonging, and lower family achievement guilt can help improve their non-cognitive abilities.
