Study on"the Belt and Road"Initiative,Unified National Market, and Carbon Emission Reduction
"The Belt and Road"initiative implements the concept of green and sus-tainable development, offering China a key opportunity to achieve low-carbon economic transformation in the new era.Based on the panel data of 267 cities in China from 2005 to 2021,this paper utilizes a difference-in-differences model to assess the impact of"the Belt and Road"initiative on carbon emissions in domestic node cities. The study finds that im-plementing"the Belt and Road"initiative significantly reduces per capita carbon emis-sions and carbon intensity in these cities, with market integration serving as a key influen-cing factor. The carbon emission reduction effect is more pronounced in node cities along"the Silk Road Economic Belt"and old industrialized cities.Furthermore,"the Belt and Road"initiative not only reduces the carbon emissions of the node cities, but also inhibits that of the neighboring cities to a certain extent. Moreover, regarding carbon emissions,"the Belt and Road"initiative and the establishment of pilot free trade zones exhibit policy linkage rather than policy substitution. This paper reveals that"the Belt and Road"initi-ative emphasizes market integration and green development, providing policy implications for advancing the construction of a unified national market and a green"Belt and Road".
