Trade Digitalization and New Export Markets—An Empirical Research Based on the Big Data from Multiple Digital Platforms
Promoting the digital transformation of trade entities and optimizing the layout of the international markets are key tasks for the high-quality development of China's foreign trade,and exploring the relationship between the tasks holds significant practical importance.This paper investigated the effect and mechanisms of trade digitali-zation on firms'exploration of new export markets by identifying whether firms utilize"multiple platforms".The research findings are as follows:Trade digitalization facilitates firms'entry into new export markets,broadens the scope of export markets,and deepens the exploitation of export markets.Firms with trade digitalization can overcome fixed trade costs related to export information and broaden the scope of export markets by exporting to new and smaller markets as well as fostering innovation capabilities.They can also over-come variable trade costs related to export distance and deepen the exploitation of export markets by improving transaction efficiency,product quality,and exiting old markets with weak competitiveness.A dynamic and comprehensive examination of firms'application of digital technologies is one of the keys to unraveling"the mystery of intensive marginal growth in destinations".
