Based on international patent transfer data from Chinese cities between 2009 and 2019,this paper employed a multi-period difference-in-differences model to ex-amine the effects of institutional innovation in FTZs on international technology trade. The results indicate that the establishment of FTZs significantly promotes international technolo-gy trade;Further mechanism tests show that FTZs facilitate international technology trade by improving financial systems and government efficiency; The positive impact of FTZ es-tablishment is more pronounced in cities in the central and western regions and in provin-cial capital cities;Additionally, the establishment of FTZs has spillover effects on interna-tional technology transfer,as neighboring cities can enhance their international technology trade through institutional innovation via learning effects. The conclusions of this study con-tribute to the integration of institutional innovation and international technology trade and provide a decision-making basis for further advancing the implementation of FTZs.
