ChatGPT Empowers Chinese Second Language Teaching:Opportunities and Challenges
The ChatGPT , as a globally popular generative artificial intelligence technology, has close connections with fields such as linguistics and education. Through literature review and analysis, it is evident that driven by factors such as educational informatization, demands in second language acquisition, the maturing artificial intelligence technologies, the success of the fourth generation of NLP paradigms, domestic language acquisition theories represented by"continuation of theory", and the practical foundation of CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning) models, the ChatGPT technology is necessary and feasible as an auxiliary teaching tool in Chinese as a second language instruction. The unique advantages of GPT-4, such as its ability to process image inputs and have manipulability, its multimodal and personalized interactive functions, and its wide range of application scenarios , make it particularly suitable for Chinese as a second language instruction. However, it also faces risks and challenges from the educational domain, such as the insufficient reliability of knowledge-based content, insufficient authentic writing abilities, and etc. Accordingly, the article proposes that teachers apply this technology in a reasonable manner, taking into account the actual conditions and needs of their students, and achieve a balance between traditional teaching and AI-assisted instruction in order to better accomplish their teaching purposes.
