Research of Group Knowledge Construction in Public Asynchronous Scientific Discussions
Promoting the scientific literacy of the public was the foundation of national scientific and technological development and a powerful measure to enhance international competitiveness. The rapid development of information technology enabled the public to participate in scientific topic discussions and construct scientific knowledge anytime and anywhere through asynchronous forums. To explore how the public constructed knowledge in asynchronous forums, this study was based on the Interaction Analysis Model proposed by Gunawardena et al.,using content analysis and lag sequence analysis methods,to investigate the level of knowledge construction and the behaviors patterns of knowledge construction exhibited by the public in asynchronous scientific discussions.Research had found that when the public participated in scientific discussions, they were mainly in the low-level knowledge construction stage represented by PH1 and PH2,and rarely entered the high-level knowledge construction stage represented by PH3,PH4,and PH5.As the level of knowledge construction increased, the number of posts gradually decreased.Furthermore, three types of behavioral sequences for the construction of public scientific knowledge had been proposed, namely, the continuous sharing and comparison of information by the public;Continuously discovering and analyzing differences in each other's perspectives; On the basis of exploring and analyzing differences in viewpoints, group knowledge construction was carried out through meaning negotiation..
