National Identity and Ethnic Identity in the Educational Strategy of Chinese-Medium Independent Secondary Schools——A Core Discussion on Foon Yew High School in Malaysia
The Malaysian government has established Malay as the main teaching medium in educational policies,aiming to strengthen national identity and cultural unity.At the same time,the Chinese community actively establishes Chinese schools and develops Chinese education to maintain ethnic characteristics and inherit Chinese culture.As an independent Chinese middle school that refused to reform,Foon Yew High School seeks a delicate balance between national identity and ethnic identity,and its survival and development strategies have attracted much attention.Through analyzing the educational strategies and prac-tices of Foon Yew High School,this paper explores how it cleverly achieves the harmonious coexistence of national identity and ethnic identity,in order to provide references and inspirations for the educational systems in Malaysia and other multicultural countries.
