On the Transformation of Zhu Ziqing's Literary Theory and Thought During the War of Resistance Against Japan
It is generally believed that the transformation of Zhu Ziqing's literary theory occurred after the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japan. In fact,Zhu Ziqing's transformation is closely related to the war that began since 1937.By compa-ring the texts before and after the war,one can see the changes in Zhu Ziqing's views on the essence of literature, literary lan-guage,and the utility of literature. From the perspective of the essence of literature,he shifted from advocating"literature of humanity"to promoting"people's literature."From the perspective of literary language,he moved from proposing"literature values subtlety over straightforwardness"to embracing"living language"that is"pleasing and accessible."From the perspec-tive of the utility of literature,he transitioned from emphasizing"natural utility"to reclaiming the role of literature as a vehicle for moral principles. This is not unique to Zhu Ziqing, but rather a microcosm of the changes in aesthetic thought after the war. Therefore, the modern Chinese literary theory after the war showed an overall trend of"turning to the left."However, the continuous attention to artistry, the recognition of the complexity of the folk, and the adherence to cultural diversity still constitute important components of his thought.
