The Jiangxi Poetry School had an accessible gateway and a traceable method,widely influencing literature from the mid-to-late Northern Song Dynasty to the Southern Song Dynasty,becoming a grand spectacle.Although Huang Tingjian is renowned for his poetry,he also explored the methods of prose composition.He broke down the barriers between poetics and prose,extracting principles of prose from poetry,covering aspects such as"compositional methods,""sentencing meth-ods,""character methods,"and"methods of using allusions."He introduced concepts like"rules,""key points,"and"lay-out"to guide prose creation.These ideas were inherited and expanded upon by his disciples and later scholars,exerting a pro-found influence and promoting the deepening of Southern Song Dynasty prose studies.Huang Tingjian himself,due to his pro-found understanding of poetics,achieved excellence in the creation of shorter articles"closer to poetry."He was known for the saying,"The smaller,the more exquisite."His short essays such as colophons and letters are exquisite,rich in meaning,and full of philosophical interest.Many of them discuss principles of conduct,scholarship,and literature,offering insightful obser-vations.
