Habitat analysis of giant panda in Baishuijiang National Nature Reserve
[Objective]With Baishuijiang National Nature Reserve(BNNR)as a case, the study aimed at quantitatively analyzing habitat characteristics of giant pandas based on GIS and RS technologies.[Method]The physical and biological environmental factors were identified within the distribution area of giant panda by projecting the points of giant panda presence onto the distribution maps of topographic fac-tors,vegetation types, staple food bamboo and rivers. The relationship between the distribution of giant panda and human activity factor(i.e.,residential area)was analyzed by carrying out buffer analysis on the resident area and overlaying the residential area with the points of giant panda presence.[Result]It was showed that the altitudinal range of giant panda presence in Baishuijiang Nature Reserve was between 1 600 and 2 900 m.They presented more frequently in the area with a gentle slope(<5°)or flat areas. The main vegetation type in the habitat was the conifer-broadleaf forest, which accounted for 30.09% of the total area of the reserve. The staple food of giant panda in the study area was Fargesia denudate and Fargesia rufa. The 92.14% points of giant panda presence fell within 0~700 m from water source region.Giant panda ob-viously kept away from the area with human activities and stayed away from the residential area(>3 500 m buffer zone of the residential area).[Conclusion]These results could provide basic data for decision making of effective conservation of BNNR.
