Chief physician ZHANG Jie's clinical experience in treatment of temporomandibular disorders by differentiation of five body constituent syndromes
This paper presents the clinical experience of chief physician ZHANG Jie in treating temporomandi-bular disorders(TMD)through differentiation of five body constituent syndromes. It is held that TMD falls under the category of"Bi disease"in traditional Chinese medicine.Based on the diverse lesion locations,Bi disease can be classified into five different syndromes corresponding to five body constituents.Hence, the treatment of TMD by acu-puncture should be based on the perspective of five body constituent diseases, and the five body constituent syn-dromes are identified initially.Subsequently, depending on the conditions of the disease, three distinct acupuncture tools such as filiform needles,Qihuang needles, and small needle knives were utilized.Guided by the concept of"five acupuncture methods corresponding to five body constituents",the Hegu acupuncture,Guan acupuncture, and Shu acupuncture techniques were flexibly employed for treatment.Simultaneously, health education regarding diet, daily life, emotional regulation, head and neck posture, oral behavioral habits, and other aspects permeates the entire treatment process of TMD and has achieved remarkable therapeutic effects.A typical medical record is attached for verification.
