Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of mpox cases in Tianjin
Objective To understand the epidemiological characteristics and clinical manifestations of mpox cases in Tianjin,so as to provide scientific basis for the prevention and control of mpox. Methods The demographic information, epidemiological history, disease onset and treatment information as well as clinical features of the patients were collected in the study for statistical analysis. Results A total of 44 case were reported in Tianjin from June 2023 to January 2024.All cases were male patients with the median age of 37 years old.Among the patients,34.09%were married and 36.36%had a history of human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)infection. All 44 cases were transmitted through homosexual contacts. The average incubation period was 8 days. There was no other suspected exposure history.More than half of the cases had 2 or more visits to the hospital before diagnosis. The type of the first hospital was the influencing factor of the timely diagnosis(P=0.049).In the whole course of disease, all cases had rashes in different parts of the body, and the proportion of genital rashes was the highest(56.82%).Most cases had fever, pruritus and pain at the sites of rashes. The ratio of genital rash and fever in the non-HIV infected group was significantly higher than those in HIV infected patients group(P=0.010 for genital rash,P=0.038 for fever). Conclusions The mpox spreaded among men who have sex with men(MSM)in Tianjin.Health promotion and education should focus on MSM.Considering the possibility that people in this group may have heterosexual behaviors with females, health education should be also applied for other groups of people. The training in medical institutions should be improved to increase vigilance for recognition and diagnose of mpox.
