Research progresses on metabolic-associated fatty liver disease affecting cognitive impairment
Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease(MAFLD)is a multi-system metabolic disorder caused by multiple factors influencing each other, and is closely related to the development of hypertension, obesity, diabetes mellitus, coronary atherosclerotic heart disease, and chronic kidney disease. There is in-creasing evidence that MAFLD can lead to cognitive impairment, which seriously disturbs patients'daily lives.MAFLD represents a modifiable risk factor for cognitive impairment. The implementation of early and active prevention strategies can help to slow down the process of cognitive impairment. This review summari-zes the research progress on cognitive impairment caused by MAFLD in terms of hepatic insulin resistance, neuroinflammation, disruption of the gut-hepatic-brain axis, elevated blood ammonia, and cerebral vascular lesions in recent years, which also provides novel insights for therapeutic approaches to the secondary cogni-tive impairment associated with MAFLD.
