Applications and challenges of spatial metabolomics in the pharmaceutical field
Changes of metabolites within organisms are crucial for reflecting disease occurrence,progression,drug mechanisms,and toxicity.Spatial metabolomics,a novel technology based on mass spectrometry imaging,can directly obtain various metabolite information from tissues.Compared to traditional metabolomics,it offers advantages such as shorter cycles,no need for matrices,and label-free analysis,overcoming the spatial information loss bottleneck of traditional methods.The technology is applicable in areas like tumor,metabolic,and infectious disease classification,diagnosis,prognosis evaluation,as well as drug and bioactive component research.However,spatial metabolomics faces several limitations,including the trade-off between resolution and sensitivity,and the challenges in precise identification and quantitative detection.Despite these challenges,spatial metabolomics is expected to evolve through exploration,potentially driving drug improvements and promoting rational drug use.
