Research progress in breast tissue biopsy and localization devices
Breast cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors among women.Pathological examination is the gold standard for tumor diagnosis, and tissue biopsy and localization are crucial for early diagnosis and precise treatment. This paper reviews various biopsy and localization techniques such as fine-needle aspiration biopsy, core needle biopsy,vacuum-assisted biopsy, breast metallic wire localization systems, radioactive seed localization, and breast tissue markers.Although these devices have their respective advantages, they are generally independent tools for either biopsy or localization, unable to integrate both functions into a single procedure. This is particularly challenging after neoadjuvant chemotherapy, where the tumor may shrink or disappear, leaving no reference point.Additionally, localization markers require specialized titanium clip forceps for placement and fixation around the original tumor site, but these specialized instruments are not widely available in all tumor surgeries, and they are relatively expensive and prone to wear. Therefore, there is a need for innovation in existing devices to enable the integration of tissue biopsy and localization in a single operation, which could reduce complications, lower medical costs, conserve medical resources, improve patient comfort, alleviate the burden of disease, and meet the diagnostic and treatment needs in the field of oncology.
