Application effect of formaldehyde isolation solution in cardiovascular pathological specimens
Objective:Formaldehyde is an effective fixative for pathological specimens, but it is a highly volatile and irritating liquid that poses environment and health hazards. This study explores the addition of an isolation solution to formaldehyde to reduce its volatility and evaluates the application effect of formaldehyde isolation solution in cardiovascular pathological specimens. Methods:A total of 20 fresh cardiovascular pathological specimens from surgeries at Wuhan Asia Heart Hospital(Xunlimen Campus)and Wuhan Asia General Hospital(Zhuankou Campus)from January 1 to April 30,2024,were collected.Specimens were fixed with 4% neutral formaldehyde, with the addition of a layer of isoparaffins as a liquid isolation layer in the specimen bottles at the Zhuankou Campus. After pathological examination,3 pathologists scored the hematoxylin-eosin(HE)staining of the same type of specimens from both hospitals. Results:There was no statistically significant difference in the HE staining scores of the same type of specimens between the 2 hospitals(P>0.05).Formaldehyde with the added isolation solution showed lower formaldehyde concentration in the air above the solution compared to formaldehyde without the isolation layer. Conclusion:The formaldehyde isolation solution does not significantly affect HE staining of cardiovascular pathological specimens and effectively reduces formaldehyde volatilization, minimizing harm to medical staff.
