Mediating effect of psychological resilience between frailty and sense of meaning in life among the elderly in communities of Sichuan province
Objective To investigate the current status of frailty, psychological resilience, and sense of meaning in life among the elderly in Sichuan province communities, and to explore the mediating effect of psychological resilience on frailty and sense of meaning in life, providing a reference for improving the sense of meaning in life among community-dwelling elderly. Methods A convenience sampling method was used to select 307 elderly residents in communities of Sichuan province who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria from September to December 2022.Data were collected using a general information questionnaire, the Tilburg Frailty Indicator(Chinese version),the Psychological Resilience Scale(Chinese version),and the Sources of Meaning in Life Scale through face-to-face interviews.Pearson correlation was used to analyze the correlation be-tween frailty, psychological resilience, and sense of meaning in life among the elderly. The mediating effect of psychological resilience between frailty and sense of meaning in life was analyzed using Model 4 in the Process macro. Results The total scores of the Tilburg Frailty Indicator(Chinese version),the Psychological Resilience Scale(Chinese version),and the Sources of Meaning in Life Scale among community-dwelling elderly were 4.22±2.80,61.75±16.65,and 143.98±24.45,respectively.Pearson correlation analysis showed that frailty was negatively correlated with psychological resilience(r=-0.425,P<0.001)and sense of meaning in life(r=-0.348,P<0.001),while psychological resilience was positively cor-related with the sense of meaning in life(r=0.494,P<0.001).The mediation effect test revealed that psychological resili-ence partially mediated the relationship between frailty and sense of meaning in life, accounting for 51.7%of the total effect. Conclusion The prevalence of frailty among community-dwelling elderly remains high, with moderate levels of psy-chological resilience and sense of meaning in life.Psychological resilience partially mediates the relationship between frailty and sense of meaning in life.It is hence crucial to assess the frailty status of community-dwelling elderly timely and develop targeted interventions to alleviate frailty, promote psychological resilience, and strengthen their sense of meaning in life,so as to promote successful aging.
