Differences in snack consumption types among junior high school students with different BMI types in Chongqing
Objective To analyze the differences in snack consumption types among junior high school students in Chongqing with different Body Mass Index(BMI)types, promote students'scientific understanding of snacks, and provide support for nutrition education tailored to students with different body types. Methods This cross-sectional study used convenience sampling to survey 175 513 junior high school students from over 300 schools across all districts and counties in Chongqing. The students anonymously completed a questionnaire designed by the research team, covering information on height, weight, and snack consumption(classified into"red zone"and"green zone"snacks).Univariate analysis was conducted using t-tests or ANOVA for group comparisons, while multivariate analysis was performed using linear regression. Results The prevalence of overweight/obesity among the respondents was 17%.Overweight/obese students consumed more of both"red zone"and"green zone"snacks.Univariate analysis revealed that except for students with different boarding statuses, significant differences in"red zone"and"green zone"snack scores were found across various sociodemographic characteris-tics(P<0.05).Multivariate linear regression analysis showed a negative correlation between"green zone"snack consump-tion and overweight/obesity and a positive correlation between"red zone"snack consumption and overweight/obesity(P<0.05).The more"green zone"snacks students consumed, the lower was their overweight/obesity rate(β=-0.17,95%CI:-0.25~-0.08);the more"red zone"snacks consumed, the higher was the overweight/obesity rate(β=0.13,95%CI:0.07~0.21).These conclusions remained valid after adjusting for confounding factors. Conclusion Overweight/obese students consume more of both"red zone"and"green zone"snacks, with"green zone"snacks serving as a protective factor against overweight/obesity.It is urgent to enrich junior high school students'knowledge of snacks, and schools should strengthen nutrition and health education to cultivate healthy snacking habits among students.
