Incidence and correlation factors of falls among the elderly in some urban areas of Chongqing municipality
Objective To understand the incidence and correlation factors of falls among the elderly aged 65 and above in some urban areas of Chongqing municipality, and to provide suggestions for the implementation of fall interventions in urban areas. Methods Two districts in the central urban area of Chongqing were selected, and a multi-stage stratified random sampling method was used to survey the elderly aged 65 and above. The incidence of falls was compared using the χ2 test, and the influencing factors of falls were analyzed using binary logistic regression analysis. Results A total of 806 elderly in-dividuals aged 65 and above were surveyed, with an average age of(73.07±6.59)years,and males and females accounted for 43.18%and 56.82%,respectively.In the past year,64 people had experienced falls, with an incidence rate of 7.94%,and the incidence rate of multiple falls was 1.74%.Overall,56.92%of the falls occurred indoors, and 43.08%occurred outdoors. The results of the multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the use of walking aids(OR=2.334,95%CI:1.131-4.818),presence of osteoporosis(OR=2.877,95%CI:1.628-5.082),cervical spondylosis(OR=1.965,95%CI:1.047-3.688),and vestibular dysfunction or deafness(OR=3.427,95%CI:1.232-9.529)were influ-encing factors for falls among the elderly. The use of walking aids(OR=4.929,95%CI:1.557-15.598),cervical spondy-losis(OR=3.579,95%CI:1.327-9.654),and the use of medications for chronic disease treatment(OR=3.659,95%CI:1.453-9.212)were influencing factors for falls among urban male elderly.Meanwhile,osteoporosis(OR=2.622,95%CI:1.287-5.340)and osteophyte formation(OR=2.183,95%CI:1.007-4.734)were influencing factors for falls among urban female elderly. Conclusion The incidence of falls among residents aged 65 and above in urban areas of Chongqing remains relatively low.The use of walking aids, the presence of osteoporosis, cervical spondylosis, vestibular dysfunction,or deafness, and other chronic diseases are influencing factors for falls.Early interventions and treatments should be targeted at various influencing factors.
