Comparison of the efficacy and safety of absorbable osteosynthesis plates and traditional Kirschner wires in the treatment of Weiss type Ⅲ supracondylar humerus fractures in children
Objective To explore the efficacy and safety of absorbable osteosynthesis plates and traditional Kirschner wires in the treatment of Weiss Type Ⅲ supracondylar humerus fractures in children, aiming to provide a reference for clinical treat-ment of such fractures. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 102 children with Weiss type Ⅲ supracondylar humerus fractures treated at Xingtai General Hospital from October 2017 to October 2023.The children were assigned to a control group(treated with traditional Kirschner wire internal fixation,n=51)and an observation group(treated with absorbable osteosynthesis plate internal fixation,n=51)based on the type of internal fixation material used. The clinical efficacy, perioperative indicators,Mayo elbow performance scores, and complications were compared between the two groups. Results The excellent and good clinical efficacy rate in the observation group was significantly higher than that in the control group[94.12%(48/51)vs.76.47%(39/51);χ2=6.331,P=0.012].The hospital stay and fracture healing time in the observation group were significantly shorter than those in the control group(P<0.05).No significant differences were noted in surgical time and intraoperative blood loss between the two groups(P>0.05).Before surgery,no significant differences were found in the Mayo subscales scores for elbow pain, motion function, daily activities, and stabili-ty,as well as the total score between the two groups(P>0.05);two months after surgery, the Mayo subscales scores for these dimensions,as well as the total score in both groups were significantly higher than before surgery, and the observation group had significantly higher scores than the control group(P<0.05).The complication rate within two months after sur-gery in the observation group was significantly lower than that in the control group[5.88%(3/51)vs.23.52%(12/51);χ2=6.331,P=0.012].Conclusion Compared with traditional Kirschner wire internal fixation, absorbable osteosynthesis plate internal fixation for treating Weiss type Ⅲ supracondylar humerus fractures in children showed better efficacy, shorter hospital stay, faster fracture healing, more effective improvement in elbow joint function, and fewer postoperative complica-tions.
