New Development of the Deliberate Metaphor Theory in the Framework of Metaphor Research
The Deliberate Metaphor Theory is a new theory in the field of metaphor research.On the basis of the Conceptual Metaphor Theory,Steen formally proposed the Deliberate Metaphor Theory after introducing the communicative dimension into the model construction of metaphor.Once this theory was put forward,it led to a wide discussion among scholars all over the world.In the subsequent development,Steen introduced the referential dimension into the metaphor model.The present study is to focus on the origin,content,metaphor processing and the function of the Deliberate Metaphor Theory based on the new four-dimensional model of metaphor.This model is developed from four different mental models of discourse construction in communication,which also shows that metaphor and metaphor processing are both four-dimensional phenomena and they are interrelated.
