Corpus-Based Study on Translator's Style of The Analects:Taking Legge and Watson's English Versions as Examples
Based on corpus technology,the present study constructs a small corpus,and uses Antconc4.2.0 retrieval software to conduct a comparative study of two English versions of The Analects(James Legge and Watson's translation versions).This study focuses on the lexical and textual levels,aiming to explore the influence of translation purpose,translator's identity,explicitation strategies and language differences on translator's style.The research results reveal that the translator's styles of the two versions have both similarities and differences.In terms of commonality,both translations focus on strengthening the cohesion of the translation,emphasizing the addition of conjunctions,personal pronoun subjects and so on.In terms of characteristics,Watson,as a scholar sinologist,has a higher lexical richness.He mainly adopts foreignization strategy to translate culture-loaded words,and the explicita-tion strategy is more prominent in the use of conjunctions.Relatively speaking,as a missionary sinologist,Legge's Christian tendency is more prominent in the translation,and his discourse is more concise and smooth.
