To realize the sustainable development of canal-type major projects and promote the construction, operation, and maintenance of green and low-carbon canals,by reviewing the construction history of canals in the world, this paper reveals the ecological and environmental problems that may be triggered by the construction process of canals, and analyzes the key areas that need to be paid attention to in the future construction of canals. The total mileage of canals in the world now exceeds 8,000 kilometers, carrying the interpretive process of human civilization and having a profound impact on the development of industry, transportation, tourism, culture, and economy.Canal construction routes, design schemes, construction techniques, and materials have evolved over time, but they have also brought challenges such as ecological degradation and the deterioration of water quality.Based on the experience of canal construction at home and abroad, there is an urgent need to set up a high standard and high-quality target of solid waste-free and near-zero-carbon canals for the future construction of green and low-carbon canals, and to deeply promote technological innovation and sustainable development in the field of canal construction, which will provide valuable insights for the construction of green canals,low-carbon canals, intelligent canals, and humanistic canals in the future.
