Hybridization Experiment among Paeonia ludlowii and Japanese Tree Peony Cultivars
Paeonia ludlowii is one of nine wild species of tree peony in China and is endemic to Xizang.Explor-ing genetic potentials of P.ludlowii and screening quality male parents could provide practical basis for further breeding of new yellow cultivars with tall plant types.Hybridization was carried out by taking P.ludlowii as fe-male parent and seven Japanese tree peony cultivars as male parents including'Kokamon','Hoki','Shimadaijin','Higurashi','Shin-jitsugetu','Yachiyotsubaki'and'Hanakisoi'.Seed setting rate, rate of full seeds and emer-gence rate of seedlings were determined. Results showed that there were 219 seeds,22 full seeds and 10 seed-lings harvested from 109 cross-pollinated flowers with average seed setting rate 13.61%,average rate of full seeds 10.05%and average emergence rate of seedlings 4.57%.Seven Japanese tree peony cultivars had certain cross-compatibility with P.ludlowii.Cross-compatibility followed order of'Shin-jitsugetu'>'Kokamon'>'Yachi-yotsubaki'>'Shimadaijin'>'Hanakisoi'>'Hoki'>'Higurashi'.Combining seed setting rate and emergence rate of seedlings, better male parents were'Shin-jitsugetu'and'Yachiyotsubaki'with better hybridization effects.
