Cultural Merging and Identity Embedding:The Realization Mechanism of Dual-identity——A Case Study of American Indians
It is a major issue to deal with the relationship between ethnic identity and national identity in the construction of a community of shared future in a multi-ethnic country.Although dual-identity is theoretically feasible, loyalty competition in practice is inevitable. The root of the problem lies in the lack of an alternative solidarity mechanism to the nation-state paradigm.Based on fieldwork, this essay examines the ethnic identity and national identity of American Indians.Due to historical and practical reasons, there is a great tension between the above two identities, while actually the two grow in the same phase rather than opposite. From a deep and diverse perspective, contemporary American Indians identify themselves as Americans in a different way from mainstream society,in which ethnic identity constitutes the premise, pathway and purpose of national identity, and the two identities are organically embedded through cultural merging. To a certain extent, this case shows that to integrate multi-ethnic countries,we should focus more on the way of identity rather than the object of identity, emphasize the shifting process from ethnic identity to national identity, and combine the search, guidance, and promotion of positive culture as an important strategy for national integration.
