An Analysis of the Methodology for the Research on the Ancient Scientific and Technological Exchange between China and Southeast Asia
Compared with the scientific and technological exchange activities in other regions, the uniqueness of the ancient scientific and technological exchange between China and Southeast Asia lies in the complexity of the ethnic composition of the exchange subjects, the compound nature of the cultural circle, and the circuitous nature of the communication channels, which objectively requires more recourse to the research methods of ethnology, anthropology, and archaeology. In the case of limited literature, more reliance needs to be placed on field investigation data, scientific and technological analysis, and archaeological data.Correspondingly, the position of observing, understanding, and describing the research object should also shift from the modern scientific and technological perspective to the local knowledge perspective, presenting the true process and picture of the ancient scientific and technological exchange in the local cultural ecology and historical evolution.
