The Management System of Salt Drying Brick Ponds in the Qing Dynasty and the Rise and Fall of Huaibei Salt Industry
By analyzing the application and management of Huaibei salt brick ponds in the production of sea salt during the Qing Dynasty,it is known that the use of salt brick pond technology led to a good development of the salt industry in Huaibei during the Qing Dynasty. However, due to the fixed management thinking of the Qing Dynasty in production management, the size, form, and quantity of brick ponds were strictly controlled. At the same time, due to the historical trend of continuous eastward migration of the Huaibei coastline, the production capacity of many salt drying brick ponds will decrease, requiring the expansion of brick ponds, the construction of segmented soil and salt ponds and SHAGE(沙格),or the complete construction of a new set of brick pond equipment.Due to the limitation of fixed management systems,it has become increasingly common to build new salt ponds and expand old ones without authorization, leading to the proliferation of illegal salt. However, with the aim of cracking down on private salt, the salt administration of the Qing Dynasty became increasingly rigid in management and continuously expanded the scope of fixed management of brick ponds after the mid Qing Dynasty, ultimately becoming an important reason for the decline of the Huaibei salt industry in the late Qing Dynasty.
