Comprehensive Evaluation of the Ornamental Value of Costus
The research aimed to improve the diversity of indoor ornamental plants in Shanghai by using the Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP)to evaluate the ornamental value of 21 species of Costus introduced and cultivated in the exhibition greenhouse of Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Gar-den.The evaluation system included 12 evaluation indexes across three aspects:flowering traits,ap-pearance traits and growth traits. The results indicated that blooming rate, flowering period, leaf color and leaf texture, each accounting for over 0.1 of the total weight in the comprehensive evalua-tion,were the main factors affecting the ornamental value of Costus.Based on the comprehensive scoring, the 21 Costus species were classified into four distinct grades.Species such as Costus fissil-igulatus,C.hybrid'Pina Colada',C.woodsonii, and C.pulverulentus'Purple Passion'were catego-rized as first-class,possessing significant overall advantages and suitability for indoor cultivation in Shanghai. The second-class encompasses nine species, including C.spicatus, which hold potential for promotion and application and can be developed and utilized strategically, considering the evalu-ation criteria and the environmental conditions of the application sites.
