Tang Wenzhi has long been overlooked by scholars due to his focus on the practical application of Chinese language education,Confucian classics,and Neo-Confucianism,rather than on theoretical exploration.However,his work Thirteen Readings of the Chinese Classics has now been edited and finalized,with publication planned over the next one to two years,offering a valuable model for contemporary Chinese studies.Deng Guoguang from the Department of Chinese at the University of Macau has dedicated many years to the study of Confucian classics and has collated and published Tang Wenzhi's posthumous manuscripts.At the same time,the collation of Cao Yuanbi's Collected Writings on Confucian Classics is in the final stages of proofreading and will be officially published next year.Tang Wenzhi,Cao Yuanbi,and Chen Huanzhang represent three distinct approaches to modern Confucian studies.Tang Wenzhi,informed by the Republic of China's new school system,implemented Confucian classics education within the framework of traditional Chinese knowledge;Cao Yuanbi,working in Zhang Zhidong's era,approached Chinese classics with meticulous precision from an academic standpoint;and Chen Huanzhang,confronted with Western academia,explored how Chinese culture could respond to and engage with the Western world.Reflecting on and summarizing the endeavors and contributions of these three scholars can help transcend the rigid disciplinary boundaries and specialization inherent in modern school education,avoiding a self-centered perspective.By cultivating an objective and rational understanding of the modern value and significance of traditional culture—particularly the Confucian classics—we can achieve the creative transformation and innovative development of this heritage.
