Objective To investigate an epidemiological investigation on a laboratory-confirmed case of rabies in Hubei province,in order to accumulate data and provide reference about the rabies prevention and control in future.Methods The"China Disease Prevention and Control Information System","Hubei Province Immunization Program Information System",and Ezhou Central Hospital outpatient and hospitalization records were consulted,epidemiological investigations were conducted on the cases,and site visits and investigations of suspected sources and location of infection were carried out.Saliva and blood samples were collected for rabies virus nucleic acid were detected by nested PCR.Results The case was a 40-year-old adult male and lived in rural areas all year round.On July 25,2023,the case was bitten on his left lower leg by a stray dog.The wound was not treated,and no rabies vaccine or human rabies immunoglobulin was given.The case became ill on August 22,with an incubation period of about 1 month.On August 23,he was diagnosed as a clinical case of rabies at Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital.On August 24,saliva and blood samples were collected from the case and sent to the Hubei Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention for testing.The case died on the same day after unsuccessful medical treatment.On August 28,the Hubei Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention laboratory test feedback results confirmed that it was a laboratory-confirmed case of rabies.No rabies cases had been reported in the case's residence in the past five years,and no similar cases had occurred in the village and neighboring areas.Conclusions This case is a laboratory confirmed case of rabies in Hubei province.The main cause of death in this case was that the wound was not treated,and rabies vaccine and rabies immunoglobulin were not administered.In the future,we should strengthen the education of rabies prevention and control knowledge for residents,especially those in rural areas,to improve their self-protection awareness.Once rabies exposure occurs,professional wound treatment and rabies vaccination should be carried out in a regular medical institution in time,and rabies immunoglobulin should be vaccinated if necessary to avoid the recurrence of such incidents.
