The concept of"all things in one"(wan wu yi ti)was one of the core issues of Neo-Confucianism in Song and Ming dynasties.Liu Zongzhou regarded the benevolence of birth(sheng sheng zhi ren)as the ontological basis of this concept, the symbiosis between human beings and the meaning world of all things as its practical manifestation, and the"mind of knowing pain and itch"(zhi tong yang xin)that all men are born with as the practical bridge for the realization of the unity between the individual with all other things. He believed that the individual could return to the original state of unity with all other things in the practice of integrating the knowledge of benevolence(shi ren ti)and doing the effort(zuo gong fu),and in this state, the individual would view self and others equally, care for nothing of the vicissitudes in their life journey, and in the process of seeing through life and death completely dissolves the barrier between the world and self that is resulted from selfishness. The theory of"all things in one"has an important position in Liu Zong-zhou's thought, involving many aspects such as ontology, effort theory, and realm theory. The study of this issue can help to promote the study of Liu's thought as a whole, and to clarify the direction of the development of this concept in Song and Ming Neo-Confucianism.
