The period of his exile to Qianzhou and Rongzhou was an important stage in Huang Tingjian's ci(a kind of poem most popular in Song Dynasty)creation.Compared with other types of his literary writing,ci could reveal Huang's spiritual world in a more comprehensive,more detailed and more honest way.The sadness and state of mind because of exile in the remote southwest,and correspondence with his friends and relatives were the main focus of his ci writing,running through which was the evolution of his state of mind of being in exile.The resulting aesthetic qualities of being poignant,brisk,romantic and natural have expanded the content and enriched the style of his Shangu Ci collection.
