Abstract
An Wang and Zu Wang is a significant epic in Buyi folk literature.Using Parry-Lord's Oral Formulaic Theory to conduct a formulaic analysis on four major themes that recur throughout the epic:"fertility,""birth and growth,""communication,"and"conflict,"this paper investigates the narrator Wei Wenkun's techniques and rules demonstrated during his performance.Through the formulaic characteristics of the epic text, this study explores the Buyi people's un-derstanding of nature, self, and ethnic identity, and finally discusses the enlightening significance of formulaic analysis for the study of epics.
