The mediating role of depressive symptoms and compassion satisfac-tion on the impact of work stress on secondary trauma among nurses
Objective To understand the secondary trauma score of nurses, and to analyze the mediating role of depressive symptoms and compassion satisfaction in work stress and secondary trauma,to provide evidence for alleviating secondary traumatic stress of nurses. Methods Female nurses from 11 tertiary grade A hospitals in three regions of Hubei province, were recruited by cluster sampling.General demographic characteristics, nurse work stress, secondary traumatic stress, compassion satisfaction, and depressive symptoms were investigated by questionnaires. Results The median scores(inter-quartile range)of secondary trauma, work stress, compassion satisfaction, and depressive symptoms in 2 172 nurses were 23.0(8.0),83.0(28.0),33.0(11.0),42.0(10.0),respectively.Secondary traumatic was positively associated with work stress and depressive symptoms(r=0.383 and 0.392,P<0.01),but negatively associated with compassion satisfaction(r=-0.137,P<0.01).Depressive symptoms played mediate roles partially between work stress and secondary trauma, and its mediate effect value was 0.033[0.027,0.040],accounting for 34.7%of the total effect. However, compassion satisfaction had no mediating effect. Conclusion The secondary trauma score of nurses is high, and depressive symptoms partially mediate the relationship between work stress and secondary trauma. It is possible to reduce the secondary trauma of nurses by alleviating depressive symptoms.
