Progress on Surface Wettability of PEEK Bone Implant Material
Polyether ether ketone(PEEK)is a good alternative to metal implants. However,PEEK has a low surface energy and exhibits biological inertness, which limits its cell adhesion when used as an implant.Extensive research has been conducted to improve the wettability of PEEK,aiming to enhance its cellular adhesion. This review briefly summarizes the relationship between material surface wettability and cell adhesion. The modification methods of PEEK wettability in the last seven years are reviewed in detail, including surface modification and blending modification, where surface modification is subdivided into chemical, physical and surface composite modification. Finally, problems that may exist in the practical application of PEEK as bone implant materials are prospected.
