Preparation and Properties of A New Hydrogel Material Based on Grapefruit Peel
In this study, novel hydrogel materials based on pomelo peel were successfully prepared by polymerisation of acrylic acid(AA)and acrylamide(AAM)using ammonium persulfate(APS)as initiator and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide(MBA)as cross-linker.Five hydrogels with different ratios were prepared by adjusting different ratios of reagents. The swelling ratios of these hydrogels in ultrapure water were tested, and the hydrogel structures were analysed by infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The water absorption properties of the selected hydrogels in different pH solutions and their water retention and holding properties in horticultural and sandy soils were further investigated. The results showed that the hydrogel(G2)with the ratio of AA/AAM/MBA of 7/3/0.025 had the best water absorption performance, with a swelling ratio of up to 563-fold.The G2 hydrogel showed a stronger water retention capacity at pH 7.42,and significantly improved the water holding and water retention capacity of horticultural and sandy soils at 0.5%and 0.1%additions.It provides a new strategy for the use of water resources in agricultural soils in arid regions.
