A systematic investigation was made on the ancient and famous trees resource in Tongren City,Guizhou Province,China,except for the provincial and above level nature reserve.The field data was also collected using for-est resource planning and design software.The ancient and famous trees were then characterized,according to the visiting and consulting historical materials.The results show that:(1)There were 49456 ancient and famous trees in Tongren City,including 277 species in 55 families and 147 genera;(2)In the species,there were six main species of ancient and famous trees,including Cupressus funebris,Liquidambar formosana,Cyclobalanopsis glauca,Pistacia chinensis,Celtis sinensis and Phoebe zhennan.33992 trees were accounted for 68.73%of the total;(3)In the con-servation grade,the third-grade ancient trees were dominated the most with 42987 trees,accounting for 87.21%of the total;(4)In the growing area,most of the ancient and famous trees were found in the countryside with 49292 trees,accounting for 99.67%of the total;(5)In the growth potential,there were 47352 normal trees,accounting for 95.75%of the total;(6)In the size,the chest circumference of ancient and famous trees was ranged between 100 and 399 cm,accounting for 92.44%of the total.
