Scientific Management of Magnesium—The Key to Improve the Yield and Quality of Sugarcane in China
Sugarcane is a crucial sugar crop in China, primarily cultivated in the southwest and southern regions. These areas are characterized by acidic soil, magnesium deficiency in soil, and low application of magnesium fertilizer in sugarcane plantations. As a result, the scarcity of magnesium has emerged as a significant limiting factor for both the yield and quality of sugarcane in China. Therefore, research on the mechanism of sugarcane magnesium nutrition and scientific management of magnesium fertilizer play a pivotal role in enhancing the quality and productivity of sugarcane. In this paper, the progress of research work on sugarcane Mg nutrition is reviewed from the soil Mg supply situation in sugarcane areas in China, the characteristics of sugarcane Mg demand, the physiology of sugarcane Mg nutrition and the effect of Mg fertilizer application. Finally,in response to the problem of magnesium deficiency in sugarcane production in China, the scientific application method of magnesium fertilizer is proposed to provide technical support for the sustainable and healthy development of China's sugarcane industry.
