Effects of Fructose and Sucrose on Seed Viability,Germination, and Seedling Vigor of Maize
Maize(Zea may L.)is an important grain crop, fructose and sucrose play a regulatory role in seed germination, growth, development, and morphogenesis in plants, but their effects on seed vitality, germination, and seedling vigor of maize are little known. In this study, using Diyu401 maize varieties as materials, whose seeds were imbibed in 0.1,0.5,1.0,5.0,10.0 mmol/L fructose and sucrose to study the effects of sucrose and fructose on seed vitality, germination, and seedling vigor. The results showed that 0.1 mmol/L fructose promoted the germination of maize seeds,1 mmol/L and 10 mmol/L fructose promoted bud growth and root tissue activity, while 5 mmol/L fructose sig-nificantly improved seed vitality.0.1 mmol/L sucrose not only significantly increased bud length, but also promoted germination, and improved root and bud tissue vitality of maize seedlings, while 1 mmol/L and 10 mmol/L sucrose promoted root length,5 mmol/L sucrose increased seed viability. These results indicated that suitable concentrations of fructose and sucrose could improve seed vitali-ty,germination,and seedling vigor of maize.
