Tradition and innovation in modern Confucian culture:from the perspective Xiong Shili's ontology
Modern Neo-Confucianism has emerged with the mission of addressing the dilemma of modernization while simultaneously reviving the tradition of Chinese culture.This revival bridges the gap between the East and the West,uniting the past with the present.As a part of the study of"traditional Chinese philosophy and modernity",Xiong Shili can be an example to explore of the distinctive features of his philosophy,which reveals the difference of interests in the Sino-Western cultures.Through drawing inspirations from the"continued growth and perpetual change in The Book of Changes",Xiong Shili makes unique illuminations with the distinctive ontological and methodological characteristics in contrast with Bergson's interpretations of"life impulse".Modern Neo-Confucianism,grounded in the exchange between Chinese and Western cultures,mutually complements the biases with the other's strengths to address the contemporary defects.Xiong Shili's philosophy seamlessly integrates the core principle of Confucianism with the requirements of modernity,thus leading Confucian spirit back to its basics and achieving the rejuvenation of Confucian spirit.In this regard,Xiong Shili's philosophy marks the initial attempt in the modernization of Confucian culture.
