Has the environmental regulation improved the efficiency of China's energy use?in view of the panel threshold model
Theoretically explaining the nonlinear transmission mechanism that the environmental regulation impacts the efficiency of energy utilization from the perspective of economic development level, the paper uses the Super-SBM model to calculate the efficiency of provincial energy utilization in China, and utilizes the panel threshold model to empirically test the impacts of the environmental regulation on the efficiency of energy utilization. As the results show, there is a threshold effect on the impact of the environmental regulation on the efficiency of China's energy utilization with the improvement of economic development level, and there is a U-shaped nonlinear relationship between the two.The impact of the environmental regulation on the efficiency of energy utilization varies with the degree of regional economic development. The mechanism analysis shows that the impacts of the environmental regulation on green technology innovation, industrial structure upgrading and energy consumption structure under the different economic development levels have a U-shaped feature consistent with the benchmark regression results. It provides valuable empirical evidence and policy implications for promoting the win-win situation of environmental protection and energy efficiency improvement in China.
