Objective To investigate the clinical effect of acupuncture therapy in the treatment of urinary retention after spinal cord injury. Methods Thirty patients of urinary retention after spinal cord injury with the residual urine volume no less than 50 ml, were treated by acupuncture therapy. Results After two courses of treatment, 8 patients recovered, 12 patients markedly ameliorated, 7 patients ameliorated, while the other 3 patients did not response to the therapy. The total effective rate of the treatment was 90%. Conclusion Acupuncture therapy is safe and effective for improving urinary retention after spinal cord injury, which is affordable and easy for extension, with no adverse reactions.
